An Army officer who suffered a heart attack three miles from the finish line of the London marathon has died.
Captain David Seath, 31, from Arbroath, Angus, collapsed as he neared the 23-mile mark and was taken to St Thomas' Hospital by ambulance.
He was a Fire Support Team Commander in 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery who was currently based in Plymouth, Devon, and had served in Afghanistan.
His devastated friends have pledged to walk the last three miles of the route and "complete what he started, in his honour".
James Walker-McClimens, who has set up a fundraising page in his memory, wrote: "Today we heard the tragic news that our friend Dave Seath passed away whilst taking part in the 2016 Virgin London Marathon.
"He was three miles short of the finish line and collapsed on Upper Thames Street.
"His friends and colleagues are planning to complete what he started, in his honour.
"We will walk as one, the final three miles of the marathon, starting where he fell.
"We're raising money for Help for Heroes, a cause he ran and died for. He was our friend and hero."
Fellow runners also paid tribute to Captain Seath.
Lisa Taylor wrote: "We ran together for while during the London Marathon. He was so happy and jolly. He was loving it.
"We sang Islands in the Stream together. Very badly and so out of tune. Lol! Such a sad day RIP. Xx."
Robert Berry, 42, collapsed and died just after completing the London Marathon in 2014.
In 2012, 30-year-old hairdresser Claire Squires collapsed just a mile from the finishing line before dying of cardiac failure.
