Over 1,200 policemen have been deployed by the Edo state Police Command to provide security in the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which is scheduled to hold today at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The state Police Commissioner, Chris Ezike, who disclosed this to journalists yesterday, said that the entire 7,871 workforce of the state police command with sister security organizations such as the Department of State Services, DSS, Civil Defense Corps, and the Army have been put on alert for the exercise.
He warned political thugs to stay away from the venue of the exercise asserting that security agencies will deal decisively with anyone caught fomenting trouble.
He further warned that no security detail or escort of prominent persons would be allowed into the stadium.
“I want to say that the police in conjunction with other security services are ready to do the needful, to provide safety and security to the delegates, officials, aspirants themselves and their agents.
“We are also ready to provide security to the good people of Edo State so that there will not be any bitterness, rancour and acrimony in the course of the primaries.
“As you are aware the party sets the rules in the primaries, so our jobs is to police the rules as set, however, violence is not a tool in an election” he stated.
The Edo CP explained further that assess to some streets around the stadium may be restricted or controlled during the event just as he added that security assessment of the venue has been carried out.
