Pandemonium broke out today shortly after the Action Congress of
Nigeria, ACN, ended its governorship rally for the second day running
in Ondo State, southwest Nigeria.
The rally was in support of
Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN,
the party’s governorship candidate in the 20
October governorship election in the state.
The fracas took place a
few metres away from the rally ground located at Baptist Junction,
along Ademulegun road, Ondo Town, in Ondo State.
Some members of
the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, at the Akure motor
park on Akure Road, were reported to have attacked a convoy of vehicles
belonging to ACN members who were returning from the campaign rally.
The attackers hurled stones which damaged the windshield of one of the buses in the convoy.
Also, a Toyota Corrolla saloon car painted in Ondo state taxi colour was badly damaged and abandoned on the narrow expressway.
Soldiers of the Ondo State’s Fast Strike Squad, anti-riot and regular policemen have been deployed to quell the clashes.
The soldiers shot sporadically in the air to disperse the rampaging NURTW members and onlookers at the scene.
The
park is said to be a stone’s throw from Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s
house, who is also the candidate of Labour Party in the 20 October
governorship election.
The ACN members later gathered on the Akure
expressway, many meters away from the scene, awaiting other members who
were trapped in the melee.
