Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service at Seme Border have
arrested a couple (names withheld) with 30 compressed blocks of weed
suspected to be cannabis valued at N3.2 million, the Customs has said.
The
Customs said the couple was arrested while attempting
to bring the
drugs into the country from the Republic of Benin through Seme Border.
Comptroller
Othman Abdu Saleh, the Customs Area Controller of Seme Border was
quoted as saying that Customs operatives were able to detect the
prohibited substance concealed in the bonnet and beneath the rear seat
of the car where the driver’s wife and a baby were seated through
intelligence and uncompromising enforcement.
Othman said the suspects were arrested while in a Kia Sephia car with Lagos registration number KSF160AG.
He
said the car used to convey the drug was intercepted at Gbaji check
point where the concealed blocks of compressed weeds were discovered.
He
said the arrest and seizure is in furtherance of his resolve to
strengthen the existing inter service tie between the customs at the
border and other government agencies.
The suspects have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
On
resumption, Othman had visited sister agencies and assured them of
increasing customs co-operation in preventing government revenue loss
and importation or exportation of any item or commodity in the import
and export prohibition list.
He has warned persons involved in any form of illegality at the border to desist from doing so.
